Tramp Art

Cisco’s Gallery offers antique tramp art dating primarily from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Characterized by repeated chip-carved notches and layers of thin wood, often repurposed from cigar boxes and shipping crates, the tradition produced frames, boxes, furniture, shrines and other domestic objects. Despite the name, scholarship has shown that tramp art was not primarily the work of hobos or itinerants; makers came from a much broader range of working communities.
