Dimensions

Inuit carved walrus ivory polar bear figural ashtray with a rectangular platform and recessed basin with notiches for resting cigarettes, topped by a seated polar bear. The tray clearly depicts a traditional hunting moment, with the bear intently watching an ice hole - represented by the basin - waiting for a seal to surface for air. These carvings were usually small carvings from walrus ivory, representing local animals and Inuit themselves, going about everyday life. Seals, caribou, polar bears, birds, and other animals important to Inuit’s survival were often represented.
