Dimensions

Southern Cheyenne Elk antler studded quirt. The piece is comprised of a Rocky Mountain Elk antler tine having two strands of braided harness leather bull whips secured in the end with a wooden dowl and strips of old red stroud wool trade clothe. The top of the quirt shows three solid square shank old brass trade tacks and the base of the quirt shows a hand drilled pierced hole which would have held a beaded wrist throng at one time. The antler has a dark yellow to red brown patina coloring from honest age and use with ridges of the antler being worn smooth along most of the piece and a heavy weight overall. The Indian Wars era piece shows well preserved condition and displays excellently. Museum collection number E1048.
