Prehistoric Wingate pottery bowl, Four Corners region, southern Colorado Plateau. Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), circa 1030 to 1175 CE. A hand built pottery bowl of the distinctive Wingate red on black type. The basin interior is filled with a single tendril spiraling on both ends, stripe filled blocks, and dark steps covering triangles. The bowl was created using the coil and scrape method then slip painted with mineral based pigments and then fired in an oxidizing atmosphere to achieve a red ground.
