Old Northwest Coast Totem Pole

Old Northwest Coast (possibly Salish) totem pole. This model pole likely dates to around 1910-1920 and is probably Coast Salish in origin. It features a Thunderbird or Eagle finial in a “wing drying” pose atop a plinth with a Two-Headed Creature and what looks like the profile view of a Wolf head carved in high relief. The pole is painted with an all-black ground and red and white painted details. The two-headed creature appears to have two long necks, four legs, and a long tail, perhaps referencing a specific supernatural being from Coast Salish oral history. Although the pole is painted in an unusual style, the finial and high relief carving style are diagnostically Coast Salish from this period. Acquired from the Seahawk Auctions. 22"H x 13"W
