The style of Halibut hooks used on the Northwest Coast underwent fairly rapid changes over the last two centuries, moving from steamed u-shape hooks to two-piece hafted wooden hooks, and finally to commercially produced metal circle hooks that are still used today. Within these broader categories there are a number of transitional examples and experimental hooks, and that appears to be the case here.
This bentwood halibut hook is more gracile and delicate than other u-shaped hooks and appears to be an Indigenously made version of a contemporary circle hook. The wood for the hook is carved very thin and tapered toward the tip, which has been steamed, bent, and bound into a full loop.
There is a metal barb where the two ends of the hook meet, which is wrapped in a Native-made, twisted fiber rope (that appears to be spruce root). The hook comes with several feet of the Native made fiber rope. A very unusual example. 46"L, 6" x 2"
