Dimensions

Model 1884 U.S. trapdoor rifle with a 20" round barrel in 45-70-500 caliber, and walnut stocks. The breach is marked U.S. Model 1884. The lockplate is marked with the federal eagle and shield next to "U.S. Springfield."

The condition is fair overall. The rifle is mechanically fine but has been modified. The barrel has been cut down from its original length to around 20". The rear sight is a replacement and incorrect for the model. The forend of the stock shows signs of the old ramrod channel that someone tried to cover with a repair. The left side of the stock has a period crack near the front lock bolt.

The stock features a decorative inlay of a powder horn, made from buffalo horn and brass. Inscribed are the words, "Buffalo Hunter Partner and Friend 1892." Affixed to the stock is a brass tack and a saddle ring. The stock appears to have been lightly sanded and varnished at the time the adornments were added. The rifle is paired with a Native-style deerhide scabbard. The scabbard is decorated with blue wool trade cloth featuring a floral motif and a loom beaded border.
