1820's to 1850's percussion rilfe. The rifle features a G. Goulcher lock stamped with a pheasant and paisley design. The lock is heavily pitted and the stamp has worn away significantly. George Golcher, of New York City, manufactured a wide range of components including lock plates for the arms market that could be used by gunsmiths unable to produce their own parts. The brass trigger guard is a match to other rifles of the time utilizing G. Goulcher locks. At some point the lock and the triger guard were fitted onto a hand hewn stock along with a trade rifle barrel. Trade rifle barrels were a cheaper barrel manufactured from thinner steel. A good example of a rifle that would have been manufactured from parts on the frontier either for own use or trade. A rifle made to be functional, not "pretty." The front and rear sights have been retrofitted to fit the barrel of the gun. The wood stock shows age. Cracks have formed at the grip and along the forearm. The stock has been crudely attached to the barrel using steel pins. The forearm has a wrap of tape at the barrel end acting as a barrel band. The ramrod may be a period replacement. It would appear this rifle was put together in the 1840's or 50's using parts salvaged from a higher end rifle. It was common for both natives and frontiersman to procure firearms in rough condition, rehabing them to back into a functional tool. Cisco’s has additional firearms in the Gallery post 1898.
