Colt Single Action Army .45 Cattle Brand Engraved

First Generation Colt Single Action Army revolver, serial number 94186, manufactured in 1883. Chambered in .45 Colt, this antique black-powder-frame SAA has the desirable 4 3/4-inch barrel, nickel-plated finish, and smooth mother-of-pearl grips. Matching serial number 94186 is visible on the frame, trigger guard, and backstrap. The small “G” markings beneath the grip-strap serial numbers are consistent with Colt factory inspection marks found on period Single Action Army revolvers, rather than an engraver's mark.

The revolver is extensively hand engraved in the distinctive Western cattle-brand or branding-iron motif, with numerous ranch-brand designs cut across the barrel, cylinder, frame, recoil shield, trigger guard, and grip straps. The brands are set against a finely punched background and interspersed with traditional floral scrollwork and engraved borders. This style became closely associated with Texas engraver Cole Agee during the 20th century and was later carried on by Weldon Bledsoe and subsequent engravers. Agee's and Bledsoe's cattle-brand work is particularly associated with Colt Single Action Army revolvers, often finished in nickel, silver, or gold.

The cattle-brand style is a later 20th-century embellishment. The unengraved hammer is consistent with documented Agee/Bledsoe cattle-brand work, but by itself is insufficient to make an attribution. The revolver remains mechanically functional, with a bore retaining visible lands and grooves along with period wear. The nickel finish remains bright overall, and the pearl grips complement the extensive Western engraving.
