Civil War Texas Officer's star flask with Confederate States of America button top. From the Yarborough Texas Collection (1849-1986). 7"H x 4 1/2"W x 2 1/2"D

The Civil War star pattern canteen is historical and visual. This one came from Texas but was noted as the “Civil War Star Pattern Canteen” not necessarily Texas. Canteens were usually filled with part liquor, the balance water, which both sanitized the water and provided additional energy in the field.

Instead of having a smooth side or concentric “bullseye” rings, both sides of the boyd are embossed with a six-pointed star pattern. Militia experts highly debated the original origin, traditionally being labeled as Southern contract pieces, while more recent excavations suggest many star canteens were actually produced by Union contractors.
