Cigar Store Indian? Even Better. This one from an amusement park in Cincinnati, OH. Opened in the 1880's and closed shortly after the Depression. Has a full trailer headpiece. Made in the same style as authentic cigar store Indians, hand-carved, light plaster coat, then painted. 83"H x 30"W x 14"D
American Indians and tobacco had always been associated because American Indians introduced tobacco to Europeans, and the depiction of Native people on smoke shop signs was inevitable. As early as the 17th Century, European tobacconists used figures of American Indians to advertise their shops. Most European carvers had never seen a Native American. By the time the smoke shop figure arrived in the Americas in the late 18th Century, it had become thoroughly "Indian."
