1815-Dated, Captain James Biddle Medal, Struck in Copper by the U.S. Mint, commemorating and the Naval action between USS Hornet and HMS Penguin, Steel rim attached, Signed by engraver FURST. F. below truncation of bust, About Uncirculated.
One of a series of 27 medals issued by the U.S. Mint commemorating American successes during the War of 1812, struck by special resolution of Congress. These medals were awarded by Congress to naval Commanders in gold and to their officers in silver. Copper and Bronze examples were made available to collectors. Nice even strike and color with some contact marks in the right obverse field.
Obverse: Bust of the Captain in uniform facing right. Legend: 'THE CONGRESS OF THE U. S. TO CAPT. JAMES BIDDLE. FOR HIS GALLANTRY, GOOD CONDUCT AND SERVICES.' Reverse: Port broadside battle view of USS Hornet, and HMS Penguin, her main top mast carried away with the island of Tristan da Cunha behind.
Legend reads: "CAPTURE OF THE BRITISH SHIP PENGUIN BY THE U. S. SHIP HORNET." Exergue: "OFF TRISTAN D'ACUNHA MARCH XXIII MDCCCXV."
Signed 'FURST. F.' below truncation of bust and to the left on the exergual line.
