A finely made seal fur and bone doll by Siberian Yupik artist Beulah Oittillian, from the village of Gambell on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska. Known for her activity dolls, so-called because they are shown doing various cultural activities, this example is a female weaver presenting the baskets she has made.
This doll is a classic example of Oittillian’s work, with a bone face and caribou and seal skin body, which reflects her attention to detail and skill at imbuing her dolls with cultural gravitas.
One of the most incredible aspects of this activity doll are the three tiny grass baskets, two of which feature lids and trade bead finials. The doll and the baskets are mounted onto a whale vertebrae base. Her work can be found in major public and private collections, including the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. 7"T x 7"D
