Antique Pieper " The Marksman" .34 Caliber Percussion Rifle

Late 19th-century H. Pieper percussion sporting rifle marked “H. Pieper” on the top barrel flat and fitted with a black composition buttplate marked “The Marksman H. Pieper,” surrounding a sporting scene of a shooter. Henri Pieper established his firearms works in Liège, Belgium, in 1866 and became an important figure in the mechanization of the Liège arms industry. His company produced a broad range of sporting firearms for the European and export markets during the latter decades of the 19th century.

This example is a small-bore .34 caliber percussion muzzleloading rifle with a 23 3/4-inch octagon barrel and seven-groove rifled bore. It is equipped with a buckhorn rear sight and a dovetailed brass-blade front sight, along with a set trigger. The combination of small caliber, rifled octagon barrel, and set trigger is characteristic of sporting rifles intended for precision shooting and small-game use.

The walnut stock retains an applied square bone plaque at the wrist secured with two screws, apparently an older personalized or decorative addition. The original-style ramrod appears period to the rifle. A black composition buttplate bears the distinctive H. Pieper “The Marksman” marking.
Condition: Good as altered. The lockplate shows considerable age and wear with remnants of floral engraving still visible. The walnut stock is generally good with scattered handling wear and two hairline cracks: one on the right side forward of the lockplate and another forward of the grip. The trigger guard appears to be a non-original replacement, possibly an older working-life repair. The percussion drum and nipple are modern replacements. Ramrod appears period. The applied bone wrist plaque appears to be an older addition. Bore retains visible seven-groove rifling.

The action appears mechanically functional, but due to the age of the firearm, proper function and safety are not guaranteed. This antique firearm has not been test-fired and should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith before use. Late 19th century, probably circa 1890s. Exact date pending further identification of proof marks.
