Antique English Flintlock Sporting Fowler

Early 19th-century English flintlock sporting fowler featuring a large smoothbore barrel, checkered walnut stock, engraved iron furniture, and British proof marks. Worn barrel stamps appear consistent with Birmingham crown-over-crossed-sceptre proof and view marks, placing the gun within the English commercial gun trade of the early 19th century. The maker is unidentified.

The fowler is fitted with a 30-inch round steel barrel measuring approximately 3/4 inch at the bore, or roughly 11 bore, with an engraved flintlock lockplate and iron furniture. The walnut stock is finely checkered through the wrist, while the iron trigger guard and lock retain decorative engraving characteristic of better-quality sporting arms of the period. A brass fore-end cap is a later replacement, and one ramrod pipe of copper or brass also appears to be an older replacement. The accompanying wooden ramrod appears period.

A deeply impressed “H.B.C.” marking is present on the left side of the stock near the lock bolt. While the initials suggest a possible Hudson's Bay Company association, the firearm does not conform to the standard configuration or marking system of a Hudson's Bay Company North West trade gun. The H.B.C. marking is therefore not attributed definitively to the Hudson's Bay Company without additional provenance.

The present 30-inch barrel may have been shortened during the gun's working life. The firearm otherwise retains the appearance of a well-used English sporting arm from the closing decades of the flintlock era.

Condition: Good as altered. The walnut stock shows scattered dents, scratches, handling marks and other wear consistent with extended period use. A small crack is developing near the lock bolt, with another crack forming along the right side of the fore-end between the ramrod-pipe area. The barrel retains an aged brown patina with scattered surface pitting and oxidation. Iron furniture shows comparable age and wear. The brass fore-end cap is a later replacement, and the brass or copper ramrod pipe appears to be an older replacement. Bore condition has not been fully inspected and is assumed to show age-related wear and possible frosting or pitting. The flintlock action appears mechanically functional; however, due to the age of the firearm, proper function and safety are not guaranteed. It has not been test-fired and should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith before use.
