Dimensions

Mid-19th-century British percussion smoothbore musket or fusil featuring a .65-caliber bore, full walnut stock, brass furniture and a distinctive bar-on-barrel fitting for a sword-type bayonet. The arm follows contemporary British military styling but differs in several respects from standard government patterns, and its exact maker and contract designation remain unidentified.

The musket is fitted with a 35 13/16ths -inch round smoothbore barrel (possibly cut down) measuring approximately .653 caliber. A substantial bar-on-barrel bayonet lug is mounted near the muzzle and is stamped with an illegible marking. The percussion sidelock bears a worn marking appearing to read “LAND.”The full walnut stock is fitted with brass trigger guard, buttplate, ramrod pipes and other furniture. Two sling swivels are present, positioned at the trigger guard and fore-stock. The steel ramrod appears period and likely original to the arm. The buttplate tang retains an illegible inventory or rack-type marking.

Condition: Good. The iron surfaces retain a gray-brown patina with scattered oxidation and wear consistent with age and service use. The walnut stock exhibits numerous handling marks, dents and abrasions but remains generally sound. A small hairline crack is present on the left side at the lock-screw or sidenail area. Brass furniture displays age-appropriate wear and patina. Markings are worn but partially legible. The steel ramrod appears period. The action appears mechanically functional, but due to the age of the firearm, proper function and safety are not guaranteed. This antique firearm has not been test-fired and should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith before use.

Mid-19th century, likely circa 1850s–1860s. Exact British maker, contract and pattern remain unconfirmed.

PERIOD: Mid 19th Century

ORIGIN: England, Europe

SIZE: Barrel Length - 35 13/16ths, Approximate Bor Size - .65 caliber
