Antique Belgian Percussion Smoothbore Fowler

Mid-19th-century Belgian percussion fowling piece with Liège proof marks, walnut stock, engraved brass furniture, and approximately .625-inch smoothbore. The barrel bears the characteristic ELG-in-oval Liège proof, confirming Belgian proofing, along with remnants of an additional gunsmith or retailer inscription that is now largely illegible. Belgium's Liège gunmaking industry produced substantial numbers of sporting arms for both domestic and export markets during the percussion era.

The gun features a 35 3/4-inch round smoothbore barrel of approximately 19–20 bore, percussion sidelock, walnut stock, and brass furniture. The brass trigger guard is decorated with floral engraving, with additional engraved detail to the brass furniture. A modern decorative ramrod is present as a replacement.

Small square metal tacks on the right side of the butt form a geometric motif resembling either a double cross or stylized dragonfly. The decoration appears to be an older addition to the gun rather than factory ornamentation. No specific Native American or other cultural attribution is made for the tack decoration.

Condition: Good as repaired. The firearm exhibits scattered handling wear, dents, scratches, finish loss, and other evidence of prolonged period use. The fore-end has a substantial crack and associated chip with later metal-pin repairs. Metal surfaces display an aged gray-brown patina with scattered oxidation and wear. Brass furniture retains a mellow patina and visible engraved decoration. The original ramrod is absent and the present rod is a contemporary decorative replacement. Bore condition is unknown. The action appears mechanically functional; however, due to the age of the firearm, proper function and safety are not guaranteed. The firearm has not been test-fired and should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith before use.
