Antique American Half-Stock Percussion Rifle

Mid-19th-century American percussion sporting rifle in the Kentucky/Pennsylvania long-rifle tradition, featuring a rifled octagon barrel, double-set triggers, brass furniture, and an elaborate pierced brass patchbox. The rifle is unsigned aside from the initials “JP” found beneath the patchbox lid. Its exact maker and region of manufacture remain unidentified.

The rifle is stocked in a dark-finished figured hardwood, likely maple, and configured as a half-stock with a soft-metal fore-end cap, likely lead or pewter. The butt is fitted with an ornate hinged brass patchbox having extensively pierced sideplates, along with a brass buttplate and trigger guard. The percussion lock retains faint remnants of floral engraving, now largely worn from prolonged handling and use. A period ramrod accompanies the rifle.

The 25-inch rifled octagon barrel appears to have been shortened during its period of use. An unused or relocated sight dovetail remains visible on the barrel, suggesting the sighting arrangement was moved following alteration. The bore size is approximately .36 - .38 caliber. The rifle may also represent an earlier flintlock arm subsequently converted to percussion, although this cannot be confirmed without further disassembly or identifying markings.

Condition: Good as altered. The rifle exhibits extensive period wear consistent with prolonged use, including scattered dents, dings, scratches, finish loss, and handling marks throughout the stock. A minor hairline crack is present at the fore-end. The lockplate engraving is substantially worn. Metal surfaces exhibit an even aged patina with scattered oxidation and wear. The brass furniture retains an attractive mellow patina. The barrel has apparently been shortened and the sights repositioned during its working life. The ramrod appears period. The rifled bore is present, though bore condition is undetermined. The action and set triggers appear mechanically functional; however, due to the age of the firearm, proper function and safety are not guaranteed. The rifle has not been test-fired and should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith before use.
