Dimensions

Pair of American Federal-period andirons with turned brass uprights, large spherical finials, spurred arched legs, and ball feet. The substantial brass spheres are separately fitted and secured with transverse pins dressed flush with the surface.

The hand-forged wrought-iron billet bars sleeve directly into the brass uprights with tightly fitted, concealed attachments. This construction, together with the turned ball-and-baluster form and forged iron supports, is consistent with American andirons produced during the early 19th century. Unmarked; maker unknown, probably Northeastern United States.

Brass retains an attractive aged surface with scattered wear and oxidation. Iron supports show expected forge texture, surface oxidation, and use.

PERIOD: Early 19th Century

ORIGIN: Massachusetts, United States
