South American, Upper / Western Amazon Basin, Ucayali River, Peru, Shipibo-Conibo people, ca. 1920s CE. A wonderful pottery bowl intricately painted with a thin linear patterning known as kene, a traditional design of the indigenous people in the Peruvian rainforest region. Kene represents a spiritual connection to the universe - indicating pathways of connection between material objects with the immaterial. These motifs are slip-painted onto clay paste then fired into a high strength material - which enables the artisans to create thin walls- the ceramists are primarily women in this culture. The surface is then covered in resin to waterproof and enhance the pigments. Size: 5.75" Diameter x 2.5" H
