Dimensions

Mid-19th century American full-stock percussion rifle built in the Kentucky and Pennsylvania long-rifle tradition. Features a heavy 30¼-inch octagonal steel barrel with 14-groove rifling, percussion ignition, figured hardwood stock, raised cheekpiece, and brass furniture. The stock appears to be maple, though this is not definitively confirmed.

The engraved percussion lock features a game-bird scene with floral scrollwork on the hammer and lockplate. A worn inscription within an engraved scroll may identify the lock as a commercial Goulcher/Golcher product, though the marking is presently too faint for a firm attribution. Such locks were commonly supplied to independent American gunsmiths during the percussion era.

The rifle shows evidence of working-life modification. An unused rear sight dovetail, altered front blade sight, relatively short barrel, and replacement copper fore-end cap suggest the barrel and stock may have been shortened or otherwise modified during its period of use. The wooden ramrod may also be a period or later replacement.

Condition: Good, as altered and refinished. Steel surfaces retain an aged gray-brown patina with scattered oxidation and pitting. Stock shows scratches, dents, small chips near the lockplate, and a hairline crack in the fore-stock. Wood appears lightly sanded and revarnished. Mechanically functional but not test-fired due to age.
