U.S. Springfield Model 1816 percussion-converted musket dated 1834, originally manufactured as a .69 caliber flintlock. The lockplate retains worn “SPRINGFIELD 1834,” “US,” and remnants of the federal eagle marking. A brass filler from the original flint pan remains visible beneath the percussion hammer.
The musket was later shortened from its original military configuration, with the round smoothbore barrel cut to 26 inches and the walnut fore-stock correspondingly reduced. Bore measures approximately .69 caliber. Trigger guard is marked “CBC,” while the opposite lock screw sideplate bears a crudely stamped “CS”; the meaning and period of that marking are unknown.
Condition: Good, as converted and altered. Metal surfaces show heavy gray-brown patina, oxidation, and scattered pitting. Walnut stock exhibits extensive handling wear, dents, scratches, chipping around the lock mortise, and a hairline crack near the wrist. Mechanically functional but not test-fired.
