Oval shaped. 9 1/2" x 7" x 3". Under the name Pomo are some 30 small tribes. The tribes which made these baskets live in Lake Sonoma and Mendocino counties, and are examples of their best work. The materials used are California sedge, nut pine, black rooted sedge, Sitka willow, Douglass spruce beaked hazel, California flax, red fir, poison oak, bracken, bullrush, nutmeg, Oregon grape, syringa, maiden-hair fern, digger pine, green briar, willow, redbud, bracken, calycanthus and hazelnut. Beautiful feathered night basket. The design, or legend on this basket represents “night.” The dark feathers represent night, the outer rim of wampum and beads present the moon. The pendants of abalone shells represent the stars. These baskets are used as wedding gifts and are greatly treasured by the tribe. The time required to construct one of these baskets is two years.
