Dimensions

Greenlandic Inuit polar bear figure carved from a whale tooth. This finely carved Greenlandic Polar Bear is depicted with an inquisitive posture and a sweet expression on its face.

The Polar Bear is carved in the same manner as a Tupilaq, with an erect posture and the ability to stand on its own. Like a Tupilaq, the Polar Bear is carved out of cetacean tooth, with the base of the tooth being formed into two wedges under the feet of the bear so it can stand without an added base.

The bear is very sensitively carved, with inlaid baleen eyes, drilled out nostrils, and carefully carved paws. This carving likely dates to the mid-20th century. 4 1/2"H

PERIOD: Mid 20th Century

ORIGIN: Arctic - Inuit, Native American
