Sioux Pipe Bag

Classic Sioux pipe bag with bright beaded panels. Brain tanned deer skin covered with yellow ochre and adorned with red, white and blue beads in a cross motif down the side. Geometric beaded panel different both sides. The original quilled slat is 4 1/2" and with the bottom fringe measures 9" overall. Overall the bag is 33", the drops in the front of quilled wrapped hide with tin cones. Yellow ochre covered bag and fringe. Marked inside with initials as shown. The tag inside the bag identifies it as belonging to Chief Ahpeahtone and loaned to the Andarcle Museum D.R. Shepherd, Carnegie Oklahoma. Ahpeahtone, also known as Que-Tah-Tsay or Apiatan (1856-1931), was a chief of the Kiowa tribe in Oklahoma who is regarded as the last traditional chief of the tribe. We assume a trade piece, or a piece taken in war. It is not traditional Kiowa.
