Hupa/Yurok basketry hat. Two strand plain twining with three strand twining at base. Warps: hazel shoots, Corylus rostrata californica. Decoration by half-twist overlay of bear grass, Xerophyllum tenax; (light); msidenhair fern, Adiantum pedatum, (dark). Ex. Clay P Bedford. Exhibited at the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, "Western North American Indian Baskets from the Collection of Clay P. Bedford," April 16 - October 19, 1980. Retains label. Illustrated, 1980, P. 11, Fig. 14. The solid triangular designs are known as "flint" whereas the inner zigzag elements are referred to as "snakes."3" x 7"
