Pair of Yakama Basketry Dolls by Sgtephanie Lastar

Pair of male and female Yakama woven basketry dolls. Marked "Stephanie Lastar, Yakama." Both signed on stands. Woven basketry dolls have historically been made by Coast Salish and adjacent Plateau tribes in present day Washington State and Oregon. The dolls are woven in dyed grasses and cedar bark and are often created in pairs – Man and Woman – and either in Western Euro-American clothes or traditional regalia, such as these two examples. This pair of dolls are by Yakama weaver Stephanie Lastar, who has mounted the dolls on bases, which he has signed. The taller figure is a Native Man with braids and a headband in what looks like a buckskin shirt and breeches, while the smaller doll depicts a Native Woman with braids and headband in a dress. 7 1/2", 6 1/2"
