Nuu-chah-Nulth totem pole, circa 1930. This older Nuu-chah-nulth totem pole has three hard to interpret, but visually interesting, figures on it. Carved in red cedar and painted in red, green, black, and yellow paints and mounted on a chamfered base. This eccentric, but as-yet-unidentified, carver was most likely Nuu-chah-nulth and was fairly prolific in the first half of the 20th century. The Nuu-chah-nulth tribal attribution is based on the apostrophe-shaped eyes, pronounced nostrils, and broad muzzle with bared teeth on the top figure. 11"

ORIGIN: Northwest - Nuu-chah-Nulth, Native American
