To the Lakota, having black hair affixed to the bonnet feather tips represents adulthood, respect, and honor. It also signifies wind, water, thunder and lightening. All of these are seen to come from the Air with the Hunkpapa and Oglalla Sioux Indians. It is spoken of as "Wakinyan", or "The Traditional Way" among the Lakota Sioux. The power of "Wakan Tanka", Great Embodiment, found in the air and water is known to the Lakota to be the essence of life. The blue tipis in the brow band have yellow doors indicating pure light and intentions reside with the bonnet owner. The many smaller Whirlwind Dragonflies on the brow band are the real spiritual desires of the wearer. The hawk feathers on the back of the crown indicate the qualities of the hawk compose the mind of the wearer. The four smaller Golden Eagle feathers over the crown attached to the major plume indicate a very pure life of the owner. The blue coup marks on the major plume quill work mean that the wearer/owner is of high moral standards.
