This diorama features an Eskimo hunter with a spear preparing to harvest a walrus. Although the imagery of this carving depicts an arctic hunt, the media points to a more temperate origin. Cottonwood bark is a popular carving medium in Southcentral and Interior Alaska, from the Kenai Peninsula up to Fairbanks.
The softness of cottonwood bark and its pleasing red color have made these carvings a staple of the Alaskan tourist market for decades. Because of the softness of the bark, it was also given to inmates in Alaskan prisons, especially in the 1970s and 1980s. This carving is a fine example of this uniquely Alaskan folk art.
