(1852-1919). Watercolor; 17" x 21". Montana painter, illustrator, and muralist who specialized in Western art and settler life. In 1877, the year after Custer’s battle, he went to Montana. He worked at odd jobs in Montana, ranging from a cattle rancher, meat hunter, to dispatch rider, stage driver, and scout in the Nez Perce War of 1877-78. This piece was painted in Missoula in 1903. This painting was a rendition of the Battle at the Big Hole, published; however, mountains were the artist’s fantasy. We’re told also a larger mural of the same image was painted in one of the local buildings. Well framed. 30" x 35" frame.
