North America, Western United States, South Dakota, Pennington County, White River Series, Brule Formation, Oligocene, ca. 30 million years ago. A fossilized oreodont skull from Merycoidodontid Culbertson, a prehistoric mammal commonly known as an Oreodont, meaning "mountain teeth." Oreodonts are an extinct family of cud-chewing herbivores and had traits that are often described as primitive pig, sheep, or camel like. They once roamed the prehistoric North American grasslands in herds grinding up the plants with their "mountainous" teeth. Size: 8" L x 6" W x 3.25" H private New Jersey, USA collection, excavated on private land in Pennington Co., South Dakota, USA in 1971.
