19th Century Sioux war shirt of brain tanned buffalo with red ochre quill wrapped hair locks. Bead strips have stylized buffalo heads, pipes and teepees. Nice patina from use inside and out. The pipes are a great icon and make us believe that the warrior it was made for must have been an important individual in his tribe. It is hard to determine tribal attribution, possibly as far west as Fort Peck Yankton Sioux, or as far east as Rosebud in the south, or the tribes at Fort Bethhold in central North Dakota. One arm has a patched bullet hole, brain tanned buffalo. On the inside, sweat and patina from wearing, long fringe, partially red ochre covered. We acquired his piece in 2007 from the private collection of Bruce and Irene Johnson of the Mystic Warriors. It sold to Joel Ostuw in 2008. We took back the Ostuw Collection on a $3MM consignment in 2021. Cisco's unconditionally guarantees this piece.
