Basketry beehive made from river reeds called a 'skep'. Common in Colonial America and up through the Civil War period. Somewhere around the turn of the century the Federal Government became involved in bee keeping regulations. As it was impossible to inspect the combs for disease, basketry beehives became illegal. They continued to be used in Europe, especially Holland where this one came from.
