Dimensions

(1887-1985.) Pen and ink; 10" x 13". Born in Bavaria, Eggenhofer eventually moved to New York and studied lithography. He worked as an illustrator, and was considered one of the most prolific artists of the western scene. He decided to become a western artist, preparing by making scale models of wagons, stagecoaches, and other props for his paintings. His first illustration was sold in 1920 to "Western Story Magazine". In 1925, Eggenhofer married and visited Santa Fe in a Model T. Even then he was a 10—horse trader--delivered mail by buckboard. He wrote and illustrated his one book, "Wagons, Mules and Men". Later he moved to Cody, WY saying, "the West got hold of me at an early age and hasn’t turned loose yet." He is the forefront of those who portrayed the wagon trail era of America, and has won top prize at the Cowboy Hall of Fame. lt has been said that Eggenhoffer produced 30,000 western illustrations. Well framed.
