Makah or coast salish totem

Item Number: A0114

This folky totem pole features an eagle, killer whale, inverted whale, Thunderbird, and a second pair of inverted whales. Stylistically, this folky, funky totem pole reflects the influence of popular culture depictions of totem poles from the era that conflated totem poles from the Pacific Northwest with tiki figures from the South Pacific. The pole also shows the influence of comic and caricature styles in the faces of the figures. The bright colors are due to carvers in this period painting their poles as brightly as possible to appeal to tourist collectors – often at the request of curio shop owners. Outside of the eccentric style, the subject matter of the pole is very traditional. Whales and thunderbird are often depicted together, as whales are the preferred prey of the thunderbird in Northwest Coast stories. The inverted whales may represent the whales that have been taken by the thunderbird.36"x7"
