Large whale bone carving of two Aleut hunters in a baidarka (kayak) mounted on a chunk of whale bone. Featuring a two-hatch boat with a grab loop on the bow, two figures and a harpoon line float on the rear deck, all carved from whale bone. The hunter in front has a harpoon raised in his left hand and holds a coil of line in the right hand. The man in the back holds a kayak paddle with the right blade down at water level and the left arm extended high in the air. Both men are wearing Aleut style visors carved from whale bone and a paddle rests on the deck on the left side of the front hunter. Both men's heads, the four paddle blades and the harpoon tip are ivory. The boat is mounted on an irregular shaped chunk of weathered whale bone with a large hole in it. Carved by Ronald Apangalook or Qaygehutkaq ("Put on Top"); Yupik Eskimo, and inscribed "QAY" on bottom. This sculpture was carved as a model for alarger piece commissioned by BP Exploration. It is displayed in an office at their headquarters in Anchorage, Alaska. Another similar carving is on public exhibit at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska.
