Inuit ivory carving of a dancing shaman

Walrus ivory figure of a dancing shaman wearing a polar bear head cover featuring an animated figure with the left arm raised above the head and the right hand extended across the body at chest level holding a spear with a tan colored point lashed to the end. The left leg of the textured polar bear skin is behind the right hand and the right leg is over the man's right forearm. The bear's eyes, nose and mouth are painted black. The ivory is old and discolored, but not mineralized (fossilized). This carving was intended to be used in a display of Ron's work at the A.N.M.C. and had been set aside in the back room of the craft shop. Carved by Ronald Apangalook or Qaygehutkaq ("Put on Top") and inscribed "QAY" on the bottom of the man's left foot. Ex. Alaska Native Medical Center, Anchorage.
