5' model canoe by Bill Hafeman. "The canoe was as important in the north as a covered wagon was in the west." The birchbark canoe had a very important role in up vast areas of valuable country in Canada and the Great Lakes region of the United States. The late 18th and up to the middle of 19th Century the wilds of the north were virtually uncharted. There were no roads, few trails and a trip overland was extremely difficult if not impossible. Full size Hafeman canoes are on display at Itasca State Park at the beginning of the Mississippi River and the Smithsonian. The 5' canoes he made are models and are seldom found.
