Humpback whale carved by Chuck Leake. Made of ancient whale bone from St. Lawrence Island. The Siberian Yupik people have lived there for over 3,000 years. Because there are no trees on the island bones were used for building their subterranean houses. As they are dug the ancient bones were exposed. It is not possible to tell what species the whale bone rib was from. Mounted on a vertebrae stand. Dismounts from base.
