Santee Sioux pony beaded shot bag, powder horn, and accessories Powder horn having decorative circles possibly signifying ownership by a chief, tooled bag in 'Morningstar' pattern with buffalo hide strap. Inside bag is another small group of finsings, including cap for horn, tri-color pony 'lazy stick' with white, blue and black beaded strap.
Also included are two expanding pouches with fringe and intricate stitching. Linen wrap on top designed to go over belt. Would have held paper cartridges, about 60” in length.
The Morningstar had a significance to the Native American and his spiritual worls. Morningstar could be expressed in story, song, the way warriors painted their faces or incised drawing on their possessions. The design on this bag features both wheels and geometric designs. It would have more than likely carried some sort of spiritual mineral stone.
The incised bag is made from saddle leather on which the holder of carved his vision. This larger bag was designed to carry many of the warriors traveling, paint pigment, food, tobacco or shot items for his rifle, all of which would be needed in battle, raids, or during hunts. Attached to the bag is the warrior's period powder horn. The horn is incised with two warrior's circle of life carvings.
The pouch and horn are bound together by an early pony beaded bandolier. The early pony beads are applique sewn onto a buffalo shoulder strap that would have been worn over the shoulder and stretched across the warrior's chest and back. This would have held them secure while riding a pony. The sash is wide with the field beaded in white beads with contracting blue and black geometric design beading. The design would have told a story, giving strength and spirit to the warrior.
The type of shot bag and beading used would indicate that this bag was used during either the percussion cap rifle periods. That would put the date between the 1820's and 1850's. Ex. Tommy Hass.
