The Assiniboine were related to the Sioux of the Northern Dakota groups in the United States and Canada, bringing them into constant conflict with the Blackfeet Confederation and their cousins, the Lakota. Their long standing connections with the British trading companies provided them with advanced weaponry, good cultural items and affluence. This Assiniboine War Bonnet, has brain tanned buffalo crown, antique Italian seed beaded brow band, hand painted imitation golden eagle tail feathers and ermine drops at the temple. The dual colored hair locks at the feather tips is indicative of the owner having two revered positions within the tribe. The red hair represented the life blood of the tribe and the white hair represented the "sky people" or spirit world beings. Being awarded the right to wear the "War Bonnet" meant esteem from his fellow warriors and tribal elders as well.
